Subtle Differences

I'm going to do a big post soon, but I've had limited iNet so i will keep this one short. I want to write these down before i forget them... these subtle differences here in Paris.

1- everyone making out in public. there is so much of this and it doens't really bother me, but it's just weird to be walking by people making out, like everywhere.

2- dog poo. it's everywhere. nobody picks it up, they leave it there for either the street cleaners, or people to step on, which neither in my opinion is very nice.

3- littering. everyone litters. my waiter opened a bottle for me and threw the cap behind him into the street without even looking.

4- parked cars leaving their parking spaces. the scenario: the cars are tiny, there isn't much parking space, and they park literally 6 inches away from each other. hence, when they want to leave a space, the repeatedly hit the car in front and in back of them several times. this is the only way to get out of their space.

5- getting redirected to "google.fr" (in french of course) whenever i type in "google.COM"

6- it's cheaper to call the states than it is to use my mobile here.

7- wine, wine and more wine! un autre bouteille de vin si vous plait! (this one i am totally not complaining)

PS - if you leave a comment please be so kind as to leave your name too, i'm not a mind reader! although i am working on it..

LOL, wow, i so agree with you, for the most part.
1) people are making out everywhere, and .. yeah, sure, they love each other, and a tiny kiss here and there is fine, but .. geez .. sometimes they need to be a bit more conservative!
2) yes, i love walking on the grass, but lately, i can`t even go one step before i see dog poop on the grass. and it`s annoying too, when people are SUPPOSED TO pick up their dog`s feces.
3) near the park, there are so many cigarettes on the floor, and -- OMG. i HATE IT when i look on the floor, and there are all these pieces of GUM stuck on the ground, that will later on turn black, and eventually, when it all turns black, all you see on the sidewalks are various black spots because of the gum!!
anyway, i think there`s a link where you can link back to me .. lol. good post (Y)

jono,
my roomate explained this parking proceedure to me one time. he was an experienced barcelona driver. basically his explanation to me was that this is why the part is called a "bumper", to bump the other cars. he followed this explanation with the infamous spanish quote, "se puede". one week later he ditched me at a bar after getting completely fucked up off absinth and drove home. the next morning i was taking out the trash when i noticed his car was parked, not next to, but under the car in front of him. se puede!

So the one thing that happens to me when I go abroad is that I associate things with the place, like music. SO have you gotten down with some french rap or something?

Very funny. Reminds me of when I first went abroad and thought those very same things!

Miss you and glad to hear you are doing well. Nice to be able to see what you are doing and experiencing through your blog. Keep posting! xo Jen

jon-

i love your entries! don't you hate the keyboards there? although you said you are using your own laptop so you probably have the standard american keyboard. i suggest you go to an icafe there and enjoy the process of trying to type on those keyboards.

anyways, please post more, and more pictures! if i cant be in paris, i can at least live vicariously.

oh and hey, i know i probably told you this already, but you should definitely check out "shakespeare & co". it's a bookstore (english language) and if i remember correctly it was M st. michel (whatever the notre dame stop is). it's the most fabulous little bookstore and it's run by students. you can easily pass 3 hours in there!

oh yeah and the shit is everywhere (and i mean that literally). it's too costly to have kids in paris, so people just keep dogs, and as a result they worship them. i guess they consider their shit a gift to the pavement. haha.

are you doing anything good for quatorze juillet?

a bientot,
ahu

haha i like your bullets. my boyfriend studied in england for a year, and he still has his default homepage as google.com.uk to this day. what a poser.
and about the bumper thing...man, i wish that guy i rear ended was french. it woulda been all good.
or maybe it's just our cars. do we have pansy ass bumpers here in the states or what??
